Just to add to the confusion, many fish dramatically change colors as they age, the juveniles looking nothing like the adults. There are only six species of Hawkfishes in the islands, I thought I knew them all. But here is a fish perched like a hawkfish, with a body and lower pectoral fins like a hawkfish, but I did not recognize it.
A check of the books later shows it to be the juvenile coloration of the very common Blackside Hawkfish.
