This month's meeting will feature Josh Walawender of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawai'i Hilo. He will be talking about projects that are using relatively small telescopes to do research...
Mauna Kea isn't the only mountain on the Big Island to host an observatory. The NOAA operated Mauna Loa Observatory is primarily dedicated to atmospheric and climate science, however there is a small astronomical research project based there. I will describe the Variable Young Stars Optical Survey (VYSOS) which is putting together two robotic telescopes on Mauna Loa. The talk will focus on our motivation and methods for automating these two "amateur sized" telescopes.
Many of you may be familiar with Josh, he often joins other local astronomers for observing at the Mauna Kea VIS with his own gear. Come hear what he has to say this Tuesday, at 7pm. This month's meeting will be at Keck Observatory's Hualalai Lecture Hall.
