The Earth is at aphelion today, reaching the furthest from the Sun in our annual cycle. Today the Earth will be about 152,097,701 km (94,509,129 miles) from the Sun. At perihelion, our closest approach to the Sun, the Earth is 147,098,074 km (91,402,505 miles) from the Sun.
It seems odd to some that the the hottest weather of northern hemisphere summer would occur when the Earth is furthest from the Sun. But the seasons are not determined by Solar distance, but rather as a result of the inclination of the Earth's axis and the angle of sunlight.
