{"id":18518,"date":"2016-04-10T12:00:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T22:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?p=18518"},"modified":"2016-04-10T21:42:59","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T07:42:59","slug":"fixing-the-stairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?p=18518","title":{"rendered":"Fixing the Stairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some carpenter years ago thought that two nails would be enough to hold the stairs up. \u00a0They did, for a decade or two, but they would eventually fail when the stringer began to split around the nails.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_18519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18519\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=18519\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18519\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-18519\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CH78-56-16100-DC-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Jacking the Stairs\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jacking the front stairs back into place for repair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>The stairs did not collapse, no one was hurt. \u00a0On the other hand they had sunk about an inch and felt decidedly unstable underfoot. \u00a0Another weekend project!<\/p>\n<p>Remove the old nails to free everything up. \u00a0Use the 3.5 ton floor jack to push the stairs back into place. \u00a0An aluminum plate and wood glue to splice together the split stringer. Quite a few new bolts, not nails, to hold everything together. \u00a0A bit of 3\/8&#8243; threaded rod on the other stringer to secure it to a joist. \u00a0I think everything is secure, solid underfoot again. \u00a0I just need a little paint to cover over the new work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some carpenter years ago thought that two nails would be enough to hold the stairs up. \u00a0They did, for a decade or two, but they would eventually fail when the stringer began to split around the nails.
