But there is more going on than this simple version.  Yes, flows ooze forward, but much of the mass of a lava flow arrives later, the flow can inflate to many times the volume as more lava arrives and lifts the crust from underneath.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_19127\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19127\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=19127\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19127\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/CI21-52-16233-DC-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"P\u0101hoehoe\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-19127\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A very close view of advancing p\u0101hoehoe lava<\/figcaption><\/figure>How many of us have played with molten wax from a candle, or perhaps simply watched a thick syrup or honey flow over a pancake?  An observant person watches things like this and learns how materials behave.  The problem is that these lessons, while valuable, sometimes do not translate well to all cases.  Lava is a good example, it behaves much differently than many would expect.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As lava flows forward it can exhibit some very different behaviors.  There are two basic forms&#8230;  A\u02bba and p\u0101hoehoe.  These two forms of lava flows are easy to spot.  A\u02bba looks like piles and piles of broken rock, while p\u0101hoehoe appears as a series of smooth mounds, often with a wrinkled surface.<\/p>\n<p>The odd part is that a lava flow may change from a\u02bba to p\u0101hoehoe behavior and back again as conditions change.  The temperature of the lava, the slope, the speed at which it is moving, several variables determine whether you have a\u02bba or p\u0101hoehoe.  The transition is usually quite abrupt with little in-between.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u02bba lava the crust cools and hardens, then breaks up as the center of the flow continues to move.  The result is a moving gravel pile covered in clinkers that range in size from gravel to boulders.  The clinkers are usually much lighter than the liquid lava underneath due to the bubbles of gas that make them rather spongy, thus they tend to remain on the surface.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_19179\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19179\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=19179\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19179\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/CI21-54-16233-DC-1-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"P\u0101hoehoe \" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-19179\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An active p\u0101hoehoe breakout at Kamokuna<\/figcaption><\/figure>P\u0101hoehoe is even more complex in it&#8217;s behaviour.  As the lava flows forward it quickly forms a skin of cooler material.  This skin can remain plastic for a while, wrinkling, folding or forming the classic p\u0101hoehoe ropy surface as the lava continues to move underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Even once cooled into a thick solid crust the process can continue.  As more and more lava arrives under the crust it can lift the crust, inflating the flow to many times the original volume.  A flow that started a foot or two thick can become tens of feet deep as this inflation continues.<\/p>\n<p>The video below is a small example of how this happens, showing a small depression being filled with p\u0101hoehoe lava.  The camera was set to take a frame every five seconds.  These frames are then played at 24fps to compress twenty minutes of time to about ten seconds in this video.
