Keck Observatory overnight captured the very first successful science data from its newest, cutting-edge instrument, the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI).<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_21479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21479\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=21479\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21479\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/KCWI_First_Light_Image_300_400_s-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"KCWI First Light Image\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-21479\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KCWI&#8217;s first look at the cosmos involved a spectral image of an exquisitely dense core of an ancient astronomical relic, showcasing the highest spectral resolving power and spatial resolution of the instrument. Credit W. M. Keck Observatory<\/figcaption><\/figure>KCWI captures three-dimensional data, as opposed to the traditional two-dimensional image or spectrum of conventional instruments. In a single observation, it records an image of the object at multiple wavelengths allowing scientists to explore both the spatial dimension (as in an image) and the spectral dimension (or color) of an object.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to see this new instrument,\u201d said Keck Observatory Director Hilton Lewis. \u201cIt takes years to design and build these very sophisticated instruments. KCWI is a superb example of the application of the most advanced technology to enable the hardest science. I believe it has the potential to transform the science that we do, and continue to keep Keck Observatory right at the forefront of astronomical research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>KCWI is extremely sensitive, specifically designed to capture high-resolution spectra of ultra-faint celestial bodies with unprecedented detail. It is able to differentiate even the slightest changes in spectral color with a great degree of accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>This powerful capability is key for astronomers because a highly-detailed spectral image allows them to identify a cosmic object\u2019s characteristics, including its temperature, motion, density, mass, distance, chemical composition, and more.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->KCWI is designed to study the wispy currents of gas that connect galaxies. The ability to study this \u201ccosmic web\u201d is the driving principle behind KCWI\u2019s design. These moments happen only a few times in one\u2019s life as a scientist,\u201d said Principal Investigator Christopher Martin, physics professor at Caltech who developed the concept of KCWI. \u201cTo take a powerful new instrument, a tool for looking at the universe in a completely novel way, and install it at the greatest observatory in the world is a dream for an astronomer. This is one of the best days of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin flew in from California to join the Keck Observatory team as they worked to achieve the milestone moment on Tuesday night, April 11. At 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, KCWI successfully achieved first light, with a spectral image of an exquisitely dense core of an ancient astronomical relic showcasing the highest spectral resolving power and spatial resolution of the instrument.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_13251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13251\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=13251\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13251\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/LyAlphaKCWI-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Lyman Alpha Blob\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-13251\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison of Lyman alpha blob observed with Cosmic Web Imager and a simulation of the cosmic web based on theoretical predictions.<br \/>Credit: Christopher Martin, Robert Hurt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cI can easily say that this is a crowning achievement, the most important day of my career,\u201d said Keck Observatory support astronomer Luca Rizzi. \u201cThis is an instrument that is breaking records in so many ways, and I\u2019m really happy that we can now share this excitement with everyone who is passionate about astronomy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin and his Caltech team, in collaboration with University of California, Santa Cruz, and industrial partners, designed and built the five-ton instrument &#8211; about the size of an ice cream truck &#8211; then shipped it to Hawaii Island on January 20. Since then, Keck Observatory\u2019s team has been working diligently to install and test KCWI on Keck II, one of the twin 10-meter Keck Observatory telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKCWI will really raise the bar in terms of Keck Observatory\u2019s capabilities,\u201d said Anne Kinney, chief scientist at Keck Observatory. \u201cI think it\u2019ll become the most popular instrument we have because it will be able to do a great breadth of science, increasing our ability to understand and untangle the effects of dark matter in galaxy formation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>W.
