At the last two open houses we have made flasher pins, we will do so again this year.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22828\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22828\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=22828\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22828\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/CI82-66-17290-DC-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"Flasher Pin\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22828\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A simple electronics project&#8230; The Flasher Pin<\/figcaption><\/figure>Flashers?  These are a simple circuit built on a PCB that flashes a pair of LED&#8217;s.  Nothing serious, just a bit of electronics fun.  The activity allows folks to learn a little electronics and soldering.<\/p>\n<p>The PCB is configured as a pin or badge, with a brooch pin soldered to the back that also serves as a switch to turn on the LED&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The original design came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/john.k.maute\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Maute at SAO<\/a>.  The circuit is based around the venerable LM555 timer IC configured as an astable multivibrator.  The LM555 timing circuit is simple enough to solder together in a few minutes, complex enough to look cool and provide a real introduction to an electronic circuit.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A lithium coin cell provides power, lasting for about a week of continuous flashing with a fresh battery.  With this battery the 555 timer needs to be a low voltage variant like the LMC555 or TLC555 in order to operate on 3V. The battery is just enough voltage to drive blue and pink LED&#8217;s that require at least 3V to illuminate.<\/p>\n<p>The fun trick in the design is the brooch pin.  The back of the pin is cut in half  with a small section removed from the center.  You can then solder both halves to the flasher PCB so that the pin can again be fastened.  By separating the two halves you create a switch that is closed when the pin is closed, turning the flasher on.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22826\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=22826\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22826\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/CC32-51-08286-DC-200x200.jpg\" alt=\"Soldering a Flasher Pin\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22826\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soldering a flasher pin during the 2008 Keck Observatory open house<\/figcaption><\/figure>We will be using the circuit as an activity for our upcoming open house.  To get ready, Shelly, our get-it-done front office gal was attempting to order the parts.  In addition to an order from Digikey for the parts we need to source a couple hundred printed circuit boards.<\/p>\n<p>Shelly figured she could simply send a photo to a PCB vendor and order the boards.  The result was rather understandable &#8220;Can you send us some Gerber files?&#8221;. I can only image what other reactions they were tempted to respond with.<\/p>\n<h5>Cleanup of the Design<\/h5>\n<p>We needed a new PCB layout..  While I was doing that I made a number of improvements to the layout to simplify construction.  I put the two LED&#8217;s in opposite corners of the PCB, mostly because I think it looks better.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22736\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=22736\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22736\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/FlasherPCB-200x200.png\" alt=\"The Flasher PCB layout\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22736\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Flasher PCB layout<\/figcaption><\/figure>Gone is the 1\u00b5F tantalum capacitor of the original design, replaced with a 1\u00b5F ceramic, one less component that can be installed backwards, cheaper too.<\/p>\n<p>The original design had the battery holder hanging half off the PCB, fixed that.  Designed for a smaller 2032 button cell battery, these are vastly cheaper at about $0.25 each, rather than a dollar each for the 2430 used previously.<\/p>\n<h5>Getting the Parts<\/h5>\n<p>The PCB was sourced from China via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SeeedStudios<\/a>.  Seeed is a favorite source for hobby PCB&#8217;s lately, no surprise, the cost was a fraction of domestic PCB houses and the service was quite good.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22737\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=22737\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22737\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/FlasherSchematic-200x200.png\" alt=\"Flasher Schematic\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22737\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Schematic for the Flasher PCB project<\/figcaption><\/figure>The only real issue was the coin cell batteries.  DigiKey would not ship to Hawaii making it necessary to look for another vendor who would.  I found an eBay vendor with the right price but wondered about the quality.<\/p>\n<p>I ordered a handful of batteries first as PKCell was a brand I was not familiar with.  The batteries turned out to be just fine, the sample I tested lasting almost a full week in the prototype flasher I built up.  Just order another 150 parts!<\/p>\n<p>Total cost for the PCB is coming in at $2.61 each in 100 quantity.
