{"id":26936,"date":"2019-10-19T10:35:52","date_gmt":"2019-10-19T20:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?p=26936"},"modified":"2019-10-19T10:48:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-19T20:48:33","slug":"a-hole-punch-cloud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?p=26936","title":{"rendered":"A Hole-Punch Cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We were just setting up the telescopes when I looked up and spotted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waikoloa School was hosting a community picnic, a couple bands, food, performances by a karate club and a halau, plus a few telescopes provided by Keck and the West Hawaii Astronomy Club.  It promised to be a fun evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I spotted was a hole-punch cloud above the school.  OK, that was unexpected.  A high thin layer of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altocumulus_cloud\">altocumulus <\/a>perforated by a neat circular hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hole had a thickened edge as if something had pushed the cloud layer aside.  Otherwise it was completely clear in the center and nearly perfectly circular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hole punch clouds are often formed when something passes through a cloud layer, such as an aircraft, disturbing and destabilizing it. This does not appear to be the case here, rather I would guess that an updraft from below pushed its way into this particular cloud from below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hole was short lived, fading in about 15-20 minutes as the cloud layer reformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=26937\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/darkerview.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/CJ86-11-19292-DC.jpg\" alt=\"A Hole-Punch Cloud over Waikoloa\" class=\"wp-image-26937\"\/><\/a><figcaption>A Hole-Punch Cloud over Waikoloa School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We were just setting up the telescopes when I looked up and spotted it.
