Every now and then you run into a word that has you reaching for the dictionary. Or, more commonly these days, typing it into Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah, have to look that one up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The source for this word is of course Captain Smyth’s Bedford Cycle<\/em>, an observing guide to the stars published in 1844. Along with being a fascinating view into astronomy in the mid 19th century, it also provides a look at the language of early Victorian England. This is a book that has had me looking up words on any number of occasions. Smalt<\/a>? Cinereous<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poetaster<\/strong>\u00a0\/po\u028a\u026at\u00e6st\u0259r\/<\/a>, like\u00a0rhymester<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0versifier<\/strong>, is a derogatory term applied to bad or inferior\u00a0poets<\/a>. Specifically,\u00a0poetaster<\/em>\u00a0has implications of unwarranted pretensions to artistic value. The word was coined in\u00a0Latin<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Erasmus<\/a>\u00a0in 1521.<\/p>Wikipedia<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Just a fun word, but one I doubt I will have regular call to use. Some of the other words just might slip their way into my vocabulary to the confusion of friends and co-workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
