Along with being a fascinating view into astronomy in the mid 19th century, it also provides a look at the language of early Victorian England. This is a book that has had me looking up words on any number of occasions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/smalt\">Smalt<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinereous\">Cinereous<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Poetaster<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Help:IPA\/English\">\/po\u028a\u026at\u00e6st\u0259r\/<\/a>, like\u00a0<strong>rhymester<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>versifier<\/strong>, is a derogatory term applied to bad or inferior\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poet\">poets<\/a>. Specifically,\u00a0<em>poetaster<\/em>\u00a0has implications of unwarranted pretensions to artistic value. The word was coined in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin\">Latin<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desiderius_Erasmus\">Erasmus<\/a>\u00a0in 1521.<\/p><cite>Wikipedia<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a fun word, but one I doubt I will have regular call to use.  Some of the other words just might slip their way into my vocabulary to the confusion of friends and co-workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have been spending time with Smyth on evenings I would like to be out with a telescope, but clouds or a bright Moon prevent me from indulging in ancient photons.
