What kind of lens do you have to capture the detail of every bump on the gecko’s head?

The lens was a fairly standard 17-85mm EF-S Macro, a lens that has been my standard carry lens for some time. Only f/4.5, but nicely sharp. This lens just died on me during my Alaska trip, halfway through an 18 day trip by boat. Looks like the aperture diaphragm has jammed. I was left with my 70-200 f/4 L telephoto and a 50mm f/1.8. A few photo instructors advocate using only a 50mm as a creative exercise, but I really did not need that to happen on a trip like this. I did get a few great shots with the nifty fifty.
